Bob Schaffer, Principal of Liberty Common, Chairman of the Leadership Program of the Rockies, and former Congressman

Bob is the Principal at Liberty Common High School (grades 7 – 12) – a charter high school and junior-high school in Fort Collins, Colorado.  The school is ranked as Colorado’s top-performing high school.  

Since 2003, Bob has been Chairman of the Leadership Program of the Rockies, a non-profit corporation providing economic education and civic-leadership training in Colorado.  He is a Trustee of Yorktown University.  He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Colorado League of Charter Schools.

Bob is the immediate past Chairman of the Colorado State Board of Education, representing Colorado’s Fourth Congressional District from 2006 to 2013.

From 1997 until early 2003, Bob represented Colorado’s Fourth Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives.  Upon his retirement from the Congress, Schaffer was awarded the Benemerenti Medal by Pope John Paul II.  

Bob left the Congress to honor a voluntary term-limit pledge he had taken when he first ran.  Thereafter he became vice-president for business development at a Denver-based energy company where he was involved in a variety of conventional and renewable-energy, mining and education projects.  Bob was the Republican nominee for a United States Senate race in 2008.  

From 1989 to 1995, Bob owned and operated Northern Front Range Marketing and Distribution, a small marketing business serving Colorado’s tourism industry.  

Beginning in 1987, Bob served nine years as an elected Colorado State Senator, where he was Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, Chairman of the State, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee, and Vice-Chairman of the Senate Education Committee. Having just turned 25 when he was sworn in, Bob was the youngest person to serve in the Colorado State Senate.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Bob graduated from Archbishop Moeller High School and the University of Dayton.  He received an honorary doctorate in Management from Colorado Technical University.  He holds a second-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do conferred by Grandmaster Jhoon Rhee.  

By appointment of Pope John Paul II, Bob is a Knight of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, Northern Lieutenancy.  He is also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 1214 in Fort Collins. Bob and his wife Dr. Maureen Schaffer (electrical engineer) have five children.  Three are warriors – Jenny Schaffer is a Captain in the US Army.  Her twin sister Emily Allen is a Captain in the US Air Force, as is her husband Casey Allen.  Justin Schaffer was recently honorably discharged upon completing service in the U.S. Army as a military intelligence officer. Sarah and Mary attend Liberty Common High School where their dad is the principal.  The Schaffers are Roman Catholic and members of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Fort Collins, Colorado.
